Singer-songwriter, Sam Hunt, will perform at Mission Australia’s community gala on April 3 to raise money for the charity’s battle against homelessness.

Hunt is expected to perform to thousands at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, with over 80% of the proceeds going to Mission Australia’s donation-funded community hub and social housing block in Coffs Harbour, NSW.

Since the last Census, homelessness in Coffs Harbour has risen to 15%, placing the region well above the national average. Mission Australia are working to curb the growing homelessness crisis and recently broke ground on their new community hub and social housing block.

Hannah Gilbert, CEO of Mission Australia, said “the project aims to create a safe, accessible place for those in need to access a variety of resources to get them off the streets and into mid-term, and eventually long-term, housing.”

“We’re extremely excited to have Sam Hunt perform at the gala.” Gilbert stated. “He’s been a supporter of Mission Australia’s projects for years and we expect his performance to offer a massive turn out. The event is going to be a lot of fun and attendees can expect great entertainment, amazing local food and lots of merchant stools representing wares from local businesses.”

Sam Hunt is keen for the upcoming event and hopes to attract a massive audience. “We’re going to have a great time at the Sydney gala. The band and I are excited to get back on the stage, get the crowds pumped and support an amazing cause.”

“I spent some time on the streets in my youth,” Hunt said, “and I wish I’d had access to the type of resource Mission Australia are working to create with the community hub, it would have made finding my way to help much easier. If I have an opportunity to help offer that aid to somebody else, then of course I’ll take it.”

The hub will provide disadvantaged people with access to homelessness services, health and wellbeing support and social inclusion activities. Neighbouring the community hub will be the social housing building, comprising of 40 one-bedroom apartments.

The development is funded entirely on donations and the upcoming gala is the first of the fundraising campaigns Mission Australia will be launching over the coming months to raise the 2 million needed to complete the project.

Tickets to the event can be purchased for $20 each, either through www.missionaustralia.galatickets.com.au or through Sam Hunt’s website www.samhuntoffical.com
