Feature: Illuminate Adelaide’s World Premiere, RESONATE, is a Saving Grace for Local Winter Tourism

As the winter chill settles upon Adelaide and the nights eat away the daylight, Illuminate Adelaide’s latest show stopping event will set the city alight.

It is the season of scarfs and sweaters, hot chocolates and bonfires. We fill our homes with the scents of stews and roasts, and, as the nights arrive early, we gather our thickest, softest blankets. We light candles, stream movies, and indulge in food good for the soul.

It is the season that we expect there to be little worth leaving the warmth of our homes for. The summer extravaganza of ‘Mad March’ has come to a close and with it, the events calendar is wiped clean.

At least, that’s how it used to be.

The South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) once struggled to fill the winter season with events exciting and unique enough to pull locals from the warmth of their homes, let alone attract interstate attention.

“Our events calendar has always had a gap in the winter months,” states Erik de Roos, the Executive Director of Marketing for the SATC. “Illuminate Adelaide has helped address that challenge and is now an important part of promoting South Australia as a vibrant state where there are always a lot of events and activities to do.”

After two seasons of sold-out success, Illuminate Adelaide has taken the worst season for tourism and turned July into one of the most anticipated months of the year.

With over 30 innovative multimedia experiences, Illuminate Adelaide’s lights will shine as beacons throughout the city, calling locals to don their winter best as they explore Adelaide at its brightest.

“Illuminate’s key draw card is Resonate,” said de Roos about the world premiere event. “It is a completely new show, by the same group that presented Light Cycles and is definitely the key thing to watch for.”

Illuminate has collaborated with international visionaries, Moment Factory, for a third year to create a brand-new experiment in sound, light and technology that will transform the Adelaide Botanic Gardens throughout July.

Resonate will guide guests along an immersive, after-dark trail throughout the Gardens, asking them to engage with nature in a way they never have before. It is Moment Factory’s specialty in creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences that drew outstanding local success in previous years. Now, as the pandemic restrictions have come to a close, the SATC expect Resonate to be a key draw for interstate tourism.

“Illuminate has worked with really amazing creators and digital AV teams from all over the world to bring Resonate to life,” said Amy O’Shaughnessy, the General Manager of Public Relations for the SATC. “It is an amazing experience, and being able to have the representation and credibility these creators bring to Illuminate is what I think will drive tourism and bring people in from interstate.”

As winter stretches the nights longer and July looms closer, Illuminate Adelaide is ready to prove once more, that they can make Adelaide the shining star of winter tourism.
