Illuminate Adelaide: A Saving Grace for South Australian Winter Tourism

From June 28 to July 30, Illuminate Adelaide will once again rise to the challenge of creating wintertime events that will make locals excited to brave the cold.

With over 30 events and art installations taking place all over the city, Illuminate Adelaide have collaborated with global artists to transform Adelaide into an urban wonderland of art, light and sound.

“Illuminate Adelaide is an important part of promoting South Australia as a vibrant state where there are always a lot of events and activities to do for everyone,” states Erik de Roos, the executive director of marketing for the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC).

“Adelaide’s events calendar always had a gap in the winter months. Illuminate Adelaide helps address that challenge,” continued de Roos.

One of Illuminate’s key events for 2023 will be ‘City Lights’, Adelaide’s largest free art display. Taking place every night from July 7 to July 23, the north, east and west precincts will set the stage for a treasure hunt of light installations and interactive artwork.

An official ‘City Lights’ map will be released in June to help friends and families to take to the city streets and tick off as many installations as they wish.

As economic pressures increase, ‘City Lights’ free installations are expected to be a major draw for local tourism.

“People’s savings are being eat away by a higher cost of living,” said de Roos. “We are waiting to see how that is going to impact discretionary spending like tourism.”

Each year, ‘City Lights’ proves to be an incredible success for local tourism, but with their biggest display yet, Illuminate Adelaide will offer locals struggling under the cost of living a chance to enjoy a night of incredible artwork without overblowing their budget.
